  
Ruins of the Church of Candelaria
This ruin complex is located on the Calle del Beaterío de Indias, which you can access through the Calle de los Duelos, turning right when you enter La Antigua Guatemala.
It was erected by initiative of the bishop Francisco Marroquín in 1548, as an eremite and finished two years later.
It contributed with the evangelization labor and with the attention to faithful natives, Masses were held in Pipil language until the end of 1690.

Its facade, with plastered finishes, evidences thorough details in its upper part.
From the old building the only part left is the left tower, ornamented with four Salomon columns disposed in pairs, two in the base and two on top.
Less than half of the right tower still stands. What can be seen today evidences the severe damages suffered with the diverse earthquakes that brought it down, starting with the one in 1717. The temple was rebuilt, but it was affected again with the quakes in 1751.
It was elevated to parish church in 1754 and succumbed definitely, like many other temples, during the earthquakes of 1773.
