Its cool climate and peaceful environment isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city makes it all a nature sanctuary.
To get there, go to the department of Huehuetenango, western Guatemala, about six hours away by the Interamericana Highway.
From Huehuetenango to Magdalena
The road to Lagoon of Magdalena begins climbing to the Olaverri Diéguez Mirador (sightseeing), the same climb that leads to Todos Santos.
A mile after the end of this rise, there is a visible sign indicating the intersection toward the lagoon.
At this point, begin 18 miles of gravel plains surrounded by beautiful with breathtaking views of natural landscapes.
A little blue sky
The first thing noticeable is the blue sky, which shows more intense shades than usual. This is due to the fact that the altitude exceeds 3,000 meters above sea level. The beauty of the landscape increases when reaching the lagoon of Magdalena which reflects the blue sky, contrasting with the green vegetation around it.
In some places the road becomes less friendly and may need a 4x4 vehicle or at least a 4WD and a skilled driver. The course is not recommended during the rainy season.
After an hour and a half away, you reach the entrance to the lagoon. There is only a tent and some villages around. This is where the walk begins which is accompanied by the river that feeds the lake. The climate is cool due to altitude, but is an unforgettable experience.
The lagoon system ends with quiet ponds, streams and, ultimately, a cascade of tens of meters high. It is important to remember that there is no tourist infrastructure whatsoever and the only option is to camp.
No doubt it is a sanctuary, a natural hiding place.
